“Be part of building a new kingdom, eh? Well, I admit that be an offer a man does no’ get every day. What say ye, daughter?”
“We came looking for work. I say this fits the bill.”

Broden and his daughter Riana have spent their lives as archers and hunters for their mountain village—and outcasts as well. When the infamous Court Wizard of Estole shows up, they discover they have the special affinity for magic he desperately needs. The two agree to his offer of becoming wizard-partners with him and his sister, but neither Broden nor Riana really know what to expect. Estole is a new country, only months old, and rife with problems as the new king tries to create a government, new laws, and fight off the old country he absconded from. They quickly learn that it will take every ounce of skill they have to keep their new countrymen alive and safe.

I was very much wanting a new Deepwoods book and picked this up to pass the time. While Arrows of Change does have a different world and situation, the character detail is still very good. I disagree with the reviewer who grew annoyed with the character's "voice". It was consistent, descriptive and helped define the gap between aristocrat and commoner that the new kingdom seeks to fill. It does end before the bulk of the coming action takes place, but I think it reads like the start of a good series - this one was world building, the could build on the first with the action other reviews were anticipating. My main complaint with this book, is one I have had with all of Raconteur's books....they keep ending. I want more Deepwoods, please and now more arrows. Please write faster.

Arrows of Change Kingmakers Book 1 eBook Honor Raconteur Reviews

It is thrilling to see another series from Honor Raconteur. Her previous books have never failed to enchant (I've read several of them multiple times) and this new offering is no exception.
Fresh & exciting, with characters that breathe & move off the page. I was hooked by page three & can hardly wait for the next installment. Brava!!!
I liked the start, the Irish/Scottish twang father and daughter had, but it got really old after awhile. I totally lost interest when I discovered the main story is based on total lack of planning by the "king" and his mages. which seem to make up the whole kingdom. they run around doing everything, never mind delegating, or have a staff of workers. never mind putting all those new arrivals in your kingdom TO WORK. or maybe build an ARMY out of them. no just have the mages build a wooden wall, or guard the town. The lack of rules astonish me. they "with drew" from the kingdom because they didn't like the rules. so sure, march into the Kings main room and announce you are going to rebel and then be surprised when he tries to kill you. or sends an army to do so. really? I just can't wrap my head around this story. A teenagers view of how to make a world work. never mind, how do you feed thousands, economy, a justice system... oh and what do you do with all those homeless kids? hmmm ever hear of orphanages? school? how about training up some good citizens? I can see the plot on this story, no mystery, I see the romance, if you call it that. the story holds no surprises. and I can't buy into the teenagers world. could not finish this book
I've read several of Honor Raconteur's books and I've enjoyed them. She is the type of writer that has you giggling out-loud uncontrollably while you read, enjoying every minute of her character's insights and journey. I feel that this book was not up to her usual quality and style.
I wish there had been a book before this one so we could have read about the family history. Also, the action was almost non stop. You really did not get very much time to catch your breath and learn about how the characters felt about their partnerships. It is a very fast paced story. Maybe in the next one author can slow it down a little and let us get to know the characters a little bit better.
I enjoyed this book. I found it a bit slow to begin with and wondered were it would lead. However soon became involved with the father/daughter team and started really enjoying the story line. I enjoyed this read and loved the relationships forming between the twins and the partners. Couldn't wait for the next read. I am hoping there is more to come. Well done and very enjoyable.
Goodness - a new series by the delightful Ms Raconteur. It's like getting a present whenever I find something new from this terrific young author (I can say young - to me almost everyone is young now!). I have been reading both science fiction and fantasy of all sorts for more than 50 years and when someone is as reliably good as Raconteur has shown herself to be I just am delighted. Buy with confidence - always a good read!
